What each part does
Fascia is the trim board that runs along the edge of the roofline, capping the ends of the rafters and giving gutters something to mount to. Soffit is the material underneath the roof overhang, often vented to let attic air circulate. Gutters catch roof runoff and channel it away from the house through downspouts, instead of letting it fall straight down along the foundation.
Why they wear out
Aluminum soffit and fascia hold up well over time, but panels can dent, come loose, or corrode at the fasteners, especially with regular exposure to sun and salt air near the coast. Gutters can sag, pull away from the fascia, or clog enough that water backs up — usually what draws attention to the problem in the first place.
